Certificates

Each time the Master's students successfully complete a lecture course, seminar or laboratory course, they are given certificates to document their results. Some professors pass out the certificate directly, some send the to the examination office, where you may pick them up as described here. When taking their examinations, the students are required to submit to the examiner a
  certificate form
into which they have already entered their personal information.
The students must collect the certificates they receive, and hand them in at the examination office for their degree certificates to be issued (see bootom of the page)

Certificate for the Practical Phase

The final year of the Master's studies is devoted to scientific work. This period is divided into a half-year-long Practical Phase 1+2 and another half year that is used for the Master's thesis. Practical phases and master thesis are typically supervised by one and the same lecturer, who is a member of LMU's Faculty of Physics. The successful completion of the practical phase is certified:

The examination office is the primary contact for students writing external Master's theses.

Registration of the Master's thesis (Phyics or Meteorology)

Before beginning work on the half-year Master's thesis, students must register the thesis personally at the examination office:

First step: Submit to the examination office the certificate received for parts 1 and 2 of the Practical Phase. The certificate must include either a score or a "passed" (in the latter case, a certificate including a score must be submitted later when handing in the Master's thesis). You will be handed a form called "Bescheinigung zur Durchführung der Masterarbeit/ Confirmation of supervision of Master's thesis".

Second step: Please submit within a week's time the following documents to the examination office:

  • the completed form "Bescheinigung zur Durchführung der Masterarbeit/ Confirmation of supervision of Master's thesis", signed by your supervisor to confirm supervision of your thesis
  • an actual confirmation of enrollment and one for the semester you conducted the practical phase.

The examination office will record the starting date of work on the Master's thesis and the date of submission, 26 weeks later.

Registration of the Master's thesis (Astrophysics)

Before beginning work on the half-year master's thesis in astrophysics, students must register the thesis personally at the examination office. Please follow the guidelines shown here.

Submission of the Master's thesis

The student must deliver two bound copies (A4, unsewn binding) of the Master's thesis to the examination office within the agreed deadline. The pages should be double-sided printed. The titlepage has to show the titel in German and English language (also two separate german/english title pages are possible). Both copies must include the following declaration, which must be signed in hand-writing:

"Declaration:

I hereby declare that this thesis is my own work, and that I have not used any sources and aids other than those stated in the thesis.

München," date of submission

Author's signature

Together with the Master's thesis, a certificate showing the score received for parts 1 and 2 of the Practical Phase must be supplied if it has not been provided upon registration of the thesis.

We send a copy of the thesis to the advisor. The advisor sends his report with the file copy back to  the examination office.

Additional Formalities for external practical phases and master thesis

If the favored advisor is not a member of LMU's Faculty of Physics, the practical phases and the master thesis have to be approved by the examination committee. You also have to search for an internal advisor from LMU's Faculty of Physics. Please follow the following steps:

  1. Hand in an informal proposal for the thesis also describing the setting of the supervision for the examination commitee (e.g. as EMail to prüfungsamt@physik.uni-muenchen.de).
  2. Arrange for an EMail from the internal LMU advisor to pruefungsamt@physik.uni-muenchen.de, mentioning that he is willing to supervise your thesis.
  3. Arrange for an EMail from the direct advisor (e.g. from another institute/university) to pruefungsamt@physik.uni-muenchen.de, mentioning that he is willing to supervise your thesis.

Examination office

You find the examination office (Prüfungsamt) in Schellingstraße 4, room H 416. Your primary contact is Mrs Fulgieri, see her office hours.
