Hands-On Particle Physics Master Classes

Interested high-school students of 11th, 12th and 13th grade, from the Munich area, are invited to get to know particle physics in a one-day hands-on particle physics master class conducted by the Ludwig Maximilian’s University of Munich (LMU) and the Max-Planck Institute for Physics. This class is part of the 6th International Particle Physics Master Classes for High School Students, which take place in more than 80 places in 23 countries with more than 5000 participants worldwide.

The master class will take place on

February 15, 2010, from 10:00 to 18:00 at

Ludwig Maximilian’s University of Munich (LMU)
Lecture Hall H030 (ground floor)
Schellingstraße 4, 80799 Munich (underground station: Universität)

In the morning, participants will be introduced to topics related to particles and research in the field of high-energy physics. After a joint lunch with participating researchers, students will have the opportunity to apply their newly gained knowledge by conducting computer-based analyses of particle reactions, using real data from experiments conducted at the European particle physics laboratory, CERN. In the evening they will exchange their results in an international video conference with other high-school groups participating in the particle physics day.

Participants are not required to have specific knowledge in particle physics.

Except for the video conference, which is conducted in English, the master class will be held in German.

Please register by fax using the form provided at the link below. Registrations should be made by physics teachers for groups of up to 6 students per teacher; however, registrations by individual high-school students will also be accepted.
